With counterfeit sales accounting for up to 5% of European trade, and fake toys the third most commonly seized item at European Customs, online brand protection is more important than ever – particularly for the SME with a global footprint. Counterfeits cost brands dearly – contributing to lost revenues and damaged reputations but, most importantly, put unsuspecting customers at risk.
Jet will be delivering practical tips including the secrets to successful online searching, what to do if you find a counterfeit, and how the Customs Authorities can help (for free).
Jet explained: “Counterfeiters are no longer targeting FMCG and luxury brands, but carefully selecting smaller brands, with wide distribution networks and good PR. And, as online marketplaces have become key distribution channels, online brand enforcement for the nursery sector has never been so crucial. We must keep our customers safe and protect cherished revenue streams.
“While online brand protection is just one part of the jigsaw, it can deliver results, quickly and with very little, if any, cost – significantly hampering the counterfeiters’ activity and protecting brands and customers.”
Europol and the EUIPO’s most recent report into counterfeiting, June 2017, identified perhaps unsurprisingly, China as the key country of provenance for counterfeit goods, with Hong Kong continuing to act as a transit point for goods originally manufactured in China. Other countries also have specific trading characteristics, however, such as Turkey – which has been linked with Bulgaria and Belgium through trade in counterfeit labels, tags and stickers, all which help to facilitate internal manufacture. Jet continues: “Counterfeiting is a world-wide problem and not something just brought out by moving manufacturing operations off-shore. However, forewarned is forearmed and the more information nursery brands have at their fingertips the quicker they can protect their customers, revenue streams and brands.”
“The SnapDragon offer is designed for SMEs so is affordable, accessible and effective,” Jet continued. “Many firms are adept at managing portals like eBay very successfully, through its VeRO system, but usually only in English. Our native Chinese speakers, and other linguists, bring part of our added-value, making sure we can communicate with sites and sellers around the world.”
Jet and her international team at SnapDragon have extensive experience of online brand protection for many nursery and baby brands around the world, many of whom are exhibiting at K&J and are happy to give recommendations. SnapDragon also works very closely with the major e-commerce, auction and social media platforms to develop appropriate anti-counterfeit strategies for SMEs.
The seminar is free and Jet and some of the team will be available for free advice sessions in both English and French on Friday and Saturday. We look forward to meeting you there!
